German automotive chemical specialist LIQUI MOLY has introduced Battery Coolant EV 200, a liquid thermal management solution designed to optimize temperature control for electric vehicle batteries, enhancing their range and service life.
LIQUI MOLY is primarily recognized for its engine oils and additives. The company’s new Battery Coolant EV 200, serves an essential function: It acts as a thermal manager. This is crucial because the technology of electric and hybrid vehicles only operates optimally within specific temperature windows.
The range between 15 °C and 40 °C is ideal for lithium-ion batteries. “Thermal management is extremely important, because it has an impact on the range,” states David Kaiser, Head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY. The range of the vehicle relies on its energy consumption. And the temperature influences the battery and engine’s service life.
Therefore, the battery’s temperature should be maintained constant. Depending on the external climate, it is cooled or heated. With the thermal management system, a distinction is made between direct and indirect battery cooling. This indirect system is more intricate, but necessary, as vehicle batteries are becoming progressively potent and consequently substantially hotter.
For this indirect cooling of the battery section, which is the case with models from Hyundai and Kia, for instance, a specialized fluid is needed, like the one now provided by LIQUI MOLY. It ensures that the battery never exceeds 60 °C in summer and that the temperature constantly remains within the perfect range between 15 °C and 40 °C, even in winter.
For LIQUI MOLY, the new product demonstrates its own inventive expertise in the electric domain. “The development effort was worthwhile,” says Kaiser. This is supported by the low conductivity throughout the fluid’s entire service life, the long-term stability, and the outstanding corrosion protection. “Hybrid Additive was our first product for e-mobility years ago. Our product range has always supported the process of technological transformation. Our slogan ‘Everything that drives works better with LIQUI MOLY’ now includes e-vehicles.”
