Automechanika organizer Messe Frankfurt recognized for sustainable initiatives, receives AEO Excellence Award 2023

The Association of Event Organisers (AEO) in the UK presents these awards annually to recognize outstanding performance in the event sector.

Messe Frankfurt, the organizer of Automechanika in Frankfurt and throughout the world, has been honored with the prestigious AEO Excellence Award 2023 in the Best Sustainability Initiative category, the group announced today.

The Association of Event Organisers (AEO) in the UK presents these awards annually to recognize outstanding performance in the event sector.

‘We are proud to be singled out in this way, especially given the highly competitive nature of the event market.’

Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt

Messe Frankfurt’s achievement is particularly significant as the AEO represents the UK target market, which holds great importance for the venue operator in the Locations business field. The association’s members organize events both within and outside the UK.

Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, expressed his pride in the recognition, highlighting the company’s commitment to addressing sustainability challenges within the event industry.

“This award underlines the transparent and professional way we deal with the key issue of sustainability when playing host to other trade fair, congress and event companies. We are proud to be singled out in this way, especially given the highly competitive nature of the event market. The competitors were high-caliber, and there were eight other renowned companies on the shortlist,” said Behm.

The panel of judges commended Messe Frankfurt for its remarkable work, impressive statistics and long-term sustainability projects. As one of the world’s leading trade fair organizers with its own exhibition grounds, Messe Frankfurt hosts approximately 250 guest events each year. The company has made sustainability a central pillar of its corporate strategy, aiming to significantly reduce the event industry’s carbon footprint.

Over the years, Messe Frankfurt has undertaken several voluntary commitments in support of sustainability, including the United Nations Global Compact, the Charter of Diversity, and the “fairpflichtet” sustainability code. In 2022, the company completed its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) rating and received a bronze medal. Additionally, Messe Frankfurt actively supports sustainability initiatives led by sector associations such as AUMA and UFI, and has signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge.

Looking ahead, Messe Frankfurt is determined to lead by example in the German trade fair sector. By the end of 2023, the company aims to become the first in the industry to secure a certificate from the environmental management system Eco Management & Audit Scheme (EMAS).
