Advance Auto Parts introduces new leadership: Shane O’Kelly to take helm as CEO

O'Kelly's appointment comes on the heels of Tom Greco's decision to step down. Having provided leadership to Advance Auto Parts since April 2016, Greco had shared his retirement plans earlier in February this year.

Advance Auto Parts has named Shane O’Kelly, an industry veteran with more than three decades of experience, to become the company’s president and chief executive officer, taking up his role on Sept. 11, 2023.

O’Kelly’s appointment comes on the heels of Tom Greco’s decision to step down. Having provided leadership to Advance Auto Parts since April 2016, Greco had shared his retirement plans earlier in February this year. To prepare for a smooth shift in leadership, Greco will continue to offer guidance as an adviser.

O’Kelly also will be joining the Advance Auto Parts board of directors, also effective Sept. 11. Gene Lee, who currently holds the role of interim executive chair for the board, is set to maintain his interim position until the year concludes.

At 54, O’Kelly’s impressive resume boasts a long-standing career filled with accomplishments. He’s lauded for his extensive expertise in operational management, strategic planning, team integration and supply chain logistics. His most recent designation was the CEO of HD Supply, operating under the banner of The Home Depot Inc. Before this, he led PetroChoice, a leading distributor of lubricants, and AH Harris, a niche construction supply distributor. Early stages of O’Kelly’s career saw him at giants like The Home Depot and McKinsey and Co. O’Kelly also served the U.S. Army as a captain. O’Kelly holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and earned his bachelor’s degree from The United States Military Academy at West Point.

In another update from the company, Tony Iskander has been given the role of Interim Chief Financial Officer. Iskander succeeds Jeff Shepherd, who departed from Advance, effective August 18, 2023, the company said.

“I am honored to be joining Advance at such an important inflection point for the company,” O’Kelly said in a statement released by the company. “I have great respect for the talented team members at Advance and all that has been accomplished, including the team’s relentless focus on delivering for customers while navigating the challenging competitive and macroeconomic environment. As we undertake an operational and strategic review of the business, I look forward to working alongside the entire Advance team and our board of directors to drive growth, operational excellence and value for all stakeholders.”
